Coaches Corner

 

Cheryl O’Toole

Coach O’Toole began her swimming career in the Evergreen Park area and later swam at Evergreen Park High School, where she was an IHSA State Qualifier. She continued her swimming career at Eastern Illinois University. Coach O’Toole was the head coach of the Rice Aquatic Foundation (RAF) before joining RASC in 2004. Coach O’Toole is an ASCA Certified Coach and has coached several swimmers to ISI State Championships.

 

Joel Staszewski

Coach Staszewski began his swimming career at RASC from 1980-1993. He swam and played water polo at Brother Rice High School from 1989-1993.Coach Staszewski  played water polo at Western Illinois University from 1994-1996. In 1999, he returned to Western Illinois University as water polo coach where he led the club to the Collegiate National Water Polo Championship, and was named Great Plains Region Coach of the Year. During this time he also coached the McDononough County YMCA Swim Team. Coach Staszewski returned to Chicago in the late 90’s to coach along side Coach Cheryl O’Toole the Rice Aquatic Foundation (RAF) before coming to RASC in 2004. He is a social studies teacher at Richards High School, as well as the head swimming and water polo coach.

Matt Latham

 

 

Matt Holben

Matt started his swimming career at age 6 and was part of the Oak Forest Swim Club until age 18.  He swam at the varsity level all four years of high school at Oak Forest High School.  Matt was a member of Eastern Illinois University's team, including three times on the conference team.  Matt is an elementary physical education teacher.  When he is not swimming and coaching, Matt enjoys spending time with his dogs Sully and Lola.
 

Taren O’Toole 

Taren began her swimming career at RASC in 1990, and later swam at RAF. She was a member of several record breaking relays, as well as a state qualifier. She swam at Richards High School, graduating in 2001. Taren attended Eastern Illinois University, where she became a scholarship recipient, named team captain in 2005 and led the team to a conference title. Taren has continued her swimming career at the Master’s level, qualifying for the National Championships. Taren is currently a science teacher and swim coach at Thorton Fractional South High School.

 

Renee Laban 

Renee’s swimming career began at Shepard Area Swim Club, where she was a state and zone qualifier. Renee later played water polo for Richards High School. She was a team captain and was selected to the All-Sectional Team in 2005. Renee is currently studying to become a radiologist.
